Research Axes

  • Sound modeling, acoustics and signal processing (RA1)
This theme concerns digital sound analysis and resynthesis, acoustic measurement and characterization of musical instruments and sound reproduction devices, computer modeling of the physics of sounds and vibrating objects, and the control of sound synthesis for musical and audio applications.
  • Musical gestures, devices and motion capture (RA2)
This theme covers the analysis of gestures involved in the performance of music including finger, hand, arm and body movements and breathing.
  • Musical information retrieval, archiving and analysis (RA3)
This theme concerns digital archiving of musical information (sound, graphics or text), cataloguing of meta-data concerning this information in databases, and techniques for searching the information in a single archive or a network of archives distributed across several libraries.
  • Multimodal immersive systems (RA4)
This theme grew out of pioneering work on surround-sound systems and has evolved to include real-time transmission over internet of high-definition multimodal content for interactive, musical shared reality situations.
  • Music perception and cognition (RA5)
This theme includes work in the psychology and neuroscience of audition.
  • Expanded musical practice (RA6)
This theme encompasses the artistic branch of CIRMMT's activities and seeks to apply scientific knowledge and technological developments to expand musical practice in performance and composition.
