Objectives

Our objectives include:

Innovation:

  • Developing innovative approaches to the scientific study of music, media and technology, including the creation, transmission, and perception of music and sound and the scientific study of the cognitive operations involved in the performance and perception of music.

Technological Development:

  • Developing new tools, such as spatial controllers, for sound recording, design, and production facilities for film, games and broadcasting.

Training:

  • Using our advanced research environment to train a new generation of Highly Qualified Scientific and Technical Personnel in this field.

Specific interests include:

  • Real-time communication of high-resolution multi-sensory content via broadband networks.
  • Applications of digital signal processing to audio and music.
  • Development of specialized hardware and software packages, microphone and loudspeaker configurations, custom digital signal processing algorithms and automated mixing.
  • The creation of virtual acoustics and shared reality environments.
  • Real-time systems and control of audio and digital recording and editing.
  • Control and modification of the acoustics in a concert hall in order to enhance a musical performance and listening experience.
  • Investigations of music perception, cognition, performance, motor movement, and the perception of movement.
  • Investigations of the cognitive neuroscience underlying music and auditory perception and cognition.
  • Design of new musical instrument controllers such as gestural controllers and sound synthesis modulators.
  • Skill acquisition, expertise, training and learning of music performance and listening skills.
  • Recording and processing techniques for multi-channel high-resolution audio.
